Bacon Zucchini Asiago Fresco Frittata and a Black Cube Frying Pan Product Review ~ Sumptuous Spoonfuls #egg #brunch #recipe & #productreview

It has felt like Christmas in July at my house the past couple days. I’ve had a few different people contact me asking if I’d like to try their products. I love times like this–it makes all the work of the blog seem a little more worthwhile. Not that it isn’t a joy to do it, but you guys, it IS a lot of work!

Anyway, the first product I got to try is the Black Cube stainless steel and nonstick frying pan from Frieling. After reading about it, I was super excited to try it. It has a layer of nonstick coating with a stainless steel “grid” that is supposed to give you the browning benefits of stainless steel and still NOT stick to the pan. Ooh yeah, I love that idea!

See the pretty grid pattern on the bottom of the pan? That’s the stainless steel poking through to help with browning.

My first excursion with this pan was making some grilled cheese sandwiches for my son. I love making grilled cheese sandwiches even more than I love eating them (and that is saying a lot!), but I love making grilled cheese sandwiches with THIS PAN way more, and here’s why:

  1. It heats up super quick! My flat cooktop stove is not very fast at heating, usually, but I noticed it was ready right away with this pan.
  2. It browns so nicely! I was surprised when I noticed the cheese was already melting and the bottom of the bread was nicely toasted and golden brown. I flipped it over and turned down the heat and in minutes I had some absolutely perfect grilled cheese sandwiches.
  3. The handle doesn’t heat up when you’re cooking and it has a nice balance and feel to it, yet it’s not super heavy.
  4. It’s dish-washer safe! I’m super lazy about cleanup in the kitchen and I really rely on my dishwasher to help me out, so this is something I really appreciate in a pan.
  5. You can use metal utensils on it without scratching the surface. I did use my metal spatula to flip the sandwiches and noticed no stratches on the surface.
  6. It’s oven safe up to 450 F. and it works with all cooktops (including induction cooktops so I can use it for my cooking classes at work).

The ads tell me it’s super durable and that’s not something I can comment on yet … only the test of time will tell that, but it looks and feels like a very well made pan. I’m trying to think of something I don’t like about this pan and the only thing I can think of is it didn’t come with a lid. Not a big deal because I have other lids that fit it, but a lid would be nice.

This Bacon Zucchini Asiago Fresco Frittata was my 2nd adventure with my new Black Cube pan. I woke up with a craving for cheesy eggs yesterday and decided to use the new pan. I was a little worried that the eggs would get TOO browned on the bottom, and was a tad bit surprised when they weren’t.  I mean, not at all. The frittata was definitely browned on the bottom, but it was a lovely thin layer of brown that had a little crunch and a delightful taste, not like the thick unpenetrable layer of browning I’ve experienced on occasions when I cook frittatas (or omelets) in other pans.

Because this pan conducts heat so well, I did have to turn the heat down to almost a low to finish cooking the eggs in the middle, and when it was almost done, I just took it off the heat altogether and let it set for a few minutes. The frittata was absolutely perfection at the end–and the flavors of the bacon, onion and zucchini with the gooey melted Asiago Fresco were divine! Just perfect with a little piece of crunchy buttered toast.

Bacon Zucchini Asiago Fresco Frittata

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: About 4 - 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 slice of lean, nitrate-free bacon
  • 1 clove garlic, peeled & chopped
  • 1 small vidalia onion, peeled & chopped (about 3/4 cup)
  • 1 small zucchini, chopped (about 1 1/21 3/4 cups)
  • Red Robin Seasoning (or your favorite seasoned salt) & freshly ground pepper
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup shredded Asiago Fresco cheese
  • About 10 cherry tomatoes, halved

Instructions

  1. Cook the bacon over medium heat in a medium frying pan. Remove from the pan and drain off any excess oil. Chop or crumble the bacon into bits.
  2. Return the bacon bits to the pan. Add the garlic, onion and zucchini and saute over medium heat until the onion is translucent and the zucchini is tender. Sprinkle with Red Robin Seasoning and freshly ground pepper to taste. Stir to mix in the seasonings, then remove the bacon zucchini mixture from the pan and give it a quick rinse in hot water, then towel dry (with clean towel).
  3. In a small bowl, quickly whisk the eggs together and add 2 Tablespoons water. Sprinkle with Red Robin Seasoning and freshly ground pepper and whisk a little more.
  4. Heat the frying pan over medium heat just until hot, then reduce heat to medium low. Pour in the eggs, sprinkle with the zucchini mixture, then the cheese. Top with chopped tomatoes. Cover and let cook for about 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the eggs are set, reducing heat if needed to cook the eggs all the way through.
  5. Slice into wedges and enjoy!
