Cantaloupe Maple Mango Smoothie

Last week my yoga teacher, Sean, asked me if I would be willing to make some recipes for a Pitta. He is a Pitta and he says the Pitta cookbooks he has found are all Indian cookbooks and he’d really like some recipes that are more like the ones he grew up on here in the US. I was intrigued, curious and excited to tackle this new challenge.

He is very into Ayurveda. I am just learning about Ayurveda. I took a couple online tests to find out which Dosha I am. There are three Doshas: Pitta (Fire), Vata (Wind/Motion) and Kosha (Water). The first test I took said I was a Pitta. The second one said I’m mostly Pitta, part Vata, and a little Kosha. Sean (my yoga teacher) says you can’t trust online tests … you really need to be tested by someone who knows what they are doing, but I am guessing an online test can at least give you an indication of what you think you are. If you don’t know what your Dosha is and you’re curious to find out, you can go take the test here.

I’ve  had a little trouble with this … I found the lists of foods recommended for Pittas do not agree: some say peaches are good, some say you must avoid them. Some say all cheese is bad, others say some cheeses are okay. They also disagree on onions. I also had trouble finding a list that included herbs, but I found one, so this is the list I have been referencing.

So yeah, I’m having a little trouble getting started with recipes for the different Doshas. I’m starting with a simple sweet cooling beverage. Pittas are fiery personalities and they tend to feel very hot much of the time, so cooling sweet and bitter foods are good. Salty, sour and spicy foods are bad. This sweet, cool smoothie is the perfect thing for balancing out the fire inside of a Pitta — it is also good for a Vata. This drink would NOT be good for a Kapha.

I know, it’s not the season for cantaloupe here in the US … I just happened to find some frozen from last summer in my freezer.

Cantaloupe Maple Mango Smoothie

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Total Time: 9 minutes
  • Yield: 1 smoothie 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/4 cups frozen cubed cantaloupe
  • 1/4 cup apple mango juice concentrate (frozen, and NOT diluted! … if you can’t find apple mango concentrate or if you have some good fresh mango at hand, use apple juice concentrate and add some fresh or frozen mango)
  • 1 Tablespoon maple syrup
  • a dash of cinnamon
  • a pinch of cardamom
  • 1 – 1 1/4 cups of lowfat milk (or more as needed)

Instructions

  1. Put all ingredients in blender and blend till smooth. Start with 1 cup of milk and add more if needed to get it as thick or thin as you like your smoothies. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

I garnished mine with a basil flower I happened to find on my basil plant. Basil is a good cooling herb for Pittas too.

I am going crazy right now for shakes and smoothies. This is a flavor combo I haven’t had so far, but now it’s on my to do list 🙂
