Ham, Cheese & Chive Cresent Pinwheels ~ Sumptuous Spoonfuls #portable #sandwich #recipe

Perfect picnic food … they are like little portable sandwiches you can take with you anywhere. Great for dipping in soup, or you could serve them as an appetizer. The best part, in my mind, is that no cans of crescent roll dough were used in the making of these little portable sandwiches.

I was looking for a good way to use up some of that leftover ham from Easter. All the recipes I ran across on the Internet used crescent roll dough. It’s just as easy, in my mind, to simply toss the ingredients in the bread machine and let the machine make the dough for you. Then I know exactly what’s in there … no crazy chemicals or preservatives.

I made these for my family for lunch today. My sister made red lentil & ham soup and we munched on pinwheels with our soup. We had our “Easter ham” for dinner last night, so we have lots of good ham left. Mom and Dad are busy prepping their garden before the rain comes, so my sis and I made lunch. It was a lovely spring lunch.

Ham, Cheese & Chive Crescent Pinwheels

  • Prep Time: 25 minutes
  • Cook Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Yield: About 30 - 35 pinwheels 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the crescent dough:

  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 2 3/4 cups bread flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 3 Tablespoons sugar
  • 3 teaspoons yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk

For the filling:

  • 8 oz. light cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup plain nonfat yogurt
  • 1/2 cup chopped sweet peppers
  • 1/2 cup snipped chives
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried dill

Sprinkle on:

  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups finely diced lean ham

Instructions

  1. Put all the dough ingredients into the bread machine and set it on the dough setting (don’t let the yeast touch the hot melted butter right away).
  2. While the dough is going, mix together the filling ingredients.
  3. When the dough is done, preheat the oven to 350 F. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.
  4. Cut the dough into 2 pieces and roll each piece out into a rectangle shape. Spread with the filling, then sprinkle with ham & cheese. Roll up jelly roll style and pinch the ends to seal. Cut the roll into 1/2 inch slices.
  5. Set the slices on a baking sheet and bake for 20 – 25 minutes or until golden brown.
