Smoky Grilled Turkey, Gouda & Pear Sandwich with Arugula ~ Sumptuous Spoonfuls #sandwich #recipe

Crunchy toasted bread, melty smoked gouda cheese, with smoked turkey, sweet pears and peppery arugula.

I had so many plans for those lovely pears I got from my friends and had such fun cooking with them (and just enjoying them straight up, no prep, just pure pear-liciousness). One of the things I thought would be really fun to try was a sandwich. Why not have fresh pears on your sandwich?

So I decided to go for some smoky, salty tastes to contrast with the sweet pears. Smoked gouda, smoked turkey. Oh yeah. A bit of mayo just to keep things from getting dry and some peppery arugula to add just a little “bite” to it. Mmm it was good.

Just be sure when you make this to make exactly the amount that you will eat right away. This sandwich is best enjoyed hot off the grill, while the bread still has that beautiful crunch, the cheese is still wonderfully melty, and the pear is still sweet and fresh and crisp.

Smoky Grilled Turkey Gouda & Pear Sandwich

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 10 minutes
  • Total Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

Scale

For each sandwich:

  • 2 slices bread (I used my homemade white whole wheat bread)
  • Light butter
  • Thin slices of smoked gouda cheese
  • Thinly sliced smoked turkey
  • Slices of fresh ripe pear
  • Several fresh arugula leaves
  • A bit of light mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Take the bottom slice of bread and butter it on one side. Set it, butter side down on the pan you’ll be using to toast it. Layer thin slices of smoked gouda cheese to just cover the bread, then add some turkey, pear, then arugula and some more slices of the gouda cheese.
  2. Spread the other slice of bread very lightly with mayonnaise and set it, mayo side down, on the sandwich. Butter the top of the bread slice with light butter.
  3. Heat the pan over medium heat, covering the sandwich and then checking every couple minutes until the bottom of the sandwich is golden brown and the cheese is starting to melt. Flip the sandwich and again, watch carefully until it’s golden brown on the other side and the cheese is melted.
  4. Use a spatula to transfer the sandwich to a cutting board and cut as desired. Then set the sandwiches on your serving plates and chow down!
