Spicy Asian Chex Mix ~ Sumptuous Spoonfuls #Asian #hot #snack #mix #recipe

I’ve always adored Chex mix from the time I was a kid … and I’ve always loved Asian snack mixes … especially the spicy ones (at least since adult-ing happened to me) … and the holidays always seem to be the time when I most want a good snack mix, both for myself and for gifts or stocking stuffers for everyone on my list.

I thought my mix was pretty mild, actually, despite my attempts to spice it up with Sriracha and hot pepper oil. People tell me, though, that my sense of “hot” is skewed … so adjust the hot pepper oil and hot pepper powder accordingly.  Start slow and add more as needed. The amount quoted below is pretty mild, in my book.

This is our holiday snack mix this year. My secret santa (or to be more correct, my secret gifter) brought me the gorgeous green placemats … and I thought how perfect this is for this mix! I wonder what the symbols on these placemats mean, what language they are in. I don’t know any foreign languages other than Latin, and that’s hardly useful in this context. I also wonder who my secret santa is?  Why did this person never disclose their true identity? What does this all mean? …

  • 1 Tablespoon sesame oil or Mongolian fire oil (or a mix of the two)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Asian spice mix
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne or other hot pepper (or to taste)
  • 1 Tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Sriracha sauce, to taste

For the snack mix:

  • 2 cups each: rice chex, corn chex, wheat chex
  • 2 cups mixed nuts
  • 2 cups rice crackers
  • 2 cups sesame sticks
  • 2 cups wasabi peas
  • 1 cup Blue Diamond Wasabi & Soy Sauce almonds

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the butter and oils with the seasonings and sauces.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the chex, nuts and rice crackers. Pour the seasoned butter over the cereal/nut mixture and stir to coat the cereals.
  3. Microwave on high for 2 minutes, stir, then microwave for another 2 minutes and stir again. Microwave for 2 minutes once more, then stir in the sesame sticks, wasabi peas, and wasabi soy flavored almonds.
