Strawberry Lemonade Slushies ~ Sumptuous Spoonfuls #drink #recipe for both #adults #kids

On 4th of July weekend, I went to visit my family at my mom and dad’s lake house. It was a typical summer weekend at the lake: there was swimming, boating, fishing, and lots of drinking. I made strawberry margaritas for the adults and then the kids wanted something too … I told them I had a special treat planned for them as well: strawberry lemonade slushies. (I really made that up on the spot … I had planned to make strawberry lemonade for the kids, but it seemed like so much more fun to do them as slushies, now that we were blending up ice cold drinks.)

There were TONS of strawberries from my mom and dad’s strawberry beds, so I wasn’t worried about running out of strawberries. Good thing, because these strawberry lemonade slushies were a hit with everyone! We quickly used up the first batch of strawberry syrup and my nephew still wanted more, so I taught him how to make them himself. I emailed my sister the recipe so they would have a written version and now I’m FINALLY getting around to blogging them. Apparently, after I left, my sister even made my mom a raspberry syrup after I left so mom could make raspberry lemonade slushies. That sounds wonderful too!

Once I got home, I wanted to make these slushies for my (now grown up) children (who were feeling reclusive and didn’t want to go to the 4th of July festivities), but I had the sudden stroke of genius to pick up a bottle of Limoncello and add some of that in as well. Oh man was THAT even better! My 22 yo son said you couldn’t even tell there was alcohol in there (and I agree …  you really couldn’t.) Limoncello also changed the texture a little, made it almost a little creamy (although there clearly wasn’t any cream in there.) That’s the kind of cocktail that can be dangerous and my son very rarely drinks, so I made the two of us just one half-batch to share and then we quit for the night. The evening was almost over, so I caught the last bit of day light on the patio to take a few photos and then enjoyed sipping on my lemonade slushie as I cleaned up the kitchen.

Strawberry Lemonade Slushies

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 10 minutes
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 3 - 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the strawberry simple syrup:

  • 1 cup strawberries
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For kid-friendly slushies:

  • 1/2 cup strawberry simple syrup
  • 1/81/4 cup lemon juice
  • 12 cups fresh strawberries
  • 1 cup water
  • about 2 1/2 cups ice

For adult slushies: add 1/4 – 1/2 cup limoncello or lemon vodka, add more syrup & lemon juice, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the simple syrup by stirring together the berries, sugar, water, and vanilla in a small saucepan over medium high heat until boiling. Reduce heat to a simmer and let cook for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Strain out the strawberries, reserving them for use in the slushies.
  2. To make the slushies: Blend together the strawberry syrup, lemon juice, fresh strawberries, water and ice. (If making adult slushies, add the alcohol in before blending.) Taste and adjust the amount of ice, syrup or lemon juice to your liking. Pour into glasses and enjoy!

Notes

Total time does not include cooling time for the syrup. You’ll have plenty of syrup left to make more batches of slushies–store it in the fridge in a covered jar.

You can use the strawberries from the syrup in the slushies as well.

You may need to add both more syrup and lemon juice if you’re using limoncello.

I have a bottle of limoncello just waiting for this terrific recipe! Sounds like a terrific way to cool off this summer.

P.S. I used to find my orange blossom water at a gourmet food shop, but I had more trouble finding it when I needed a bottle. I was told to check at a Middle Eastern market, but no luck. I just ordered it from Amazon 🙂

Thank you Liz for your sweet comment and a huge thank you for letting me know about the orange blossom water, Liz. I feel like there’s got to be a way to make it at home … (but I live too far north for an orange tree …).
