Rote Grutze {German Fruit Pudding}

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lb. fresh or frozen red fruit such as raspberries, cherries, currants, etc.
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 12 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/23/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 Tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 2 Tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the berries, wine, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and salt. Cook over low heat until the berries are soft, about 20 minutes.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch with the water until dissolved. Add the cornstarch mixture to the berry mixture, stirring constantly. Simmer for 3- 5 minutes. Remove the cinnamon stick and pour the berry mixture into a bowl or container.
  3. Let cool. Serve chilled with whipped cream, yogurt, or custard.
