Butterbeer Cocktail ~ Learn how to make Harry Potter style butterbeers for adults at home

Something for the adult Harry Potter fans, this creamy, sweet and buttery butterbeer cocktail tastes so good, it’ll disappear in a flash. No wand or magic words required. 😉

Are you a Harry Potter fan? My kids and I have long been fascinated with Harry Potter. We have 3 full sets of the books in our house: one was my son’s first set. He read them so much they got worn out, so he asked for a second set. Then my daughter wanted to read them, but my son wasn’t letting her touch any of his books, so she had to have a set too.

When my son was little, we had a Harry Potter themed birthday part for him. He got to “be” Harry Potter and wear a black robe and broken glasses. We had potions class (mixing colored vinegar with baking soda in glass “test tubes”) and we made a magical cauldron punch where the kids each got to dump in their choice of flavored soda, then we added scoops of sherbet and mixed it all up in a big black (plastic) cauldron. I was a little worried how it would taste in the end but the kids had so much fun with it and they happily drank up their witches brew, so I guess it turned out all right.

Well, this year in April, my (now adult) kids and I took a trip to Orlando, and one of the places on our list to visit was (of course) the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Studios, where they serve non-alcoholic butterbeer with this really awesome foam on top. My kids each had two of the famous beverages. I tried a sip, but they were a little too sweet for my tastes, so I settled for some Gilly water. (The cheapskate inside of me was cringing at paying $5 for a small bottle of water.)

Honestly, though, aside from the butterbeers, the Hogwarts train ride and the candy shop (which we really enjoyed), we weren’t a huge fan of Harry Potter world. We are self professed nerds that aren’t accustomed to crowds and even though we went off-season and early in the morning, the crowds were stifling. It felt like a huge overcrowded, overpriced shopping mall. Once we escaped from Harry Potter World, we were amazed to discover the rest of Universal Studios was practically empty … but we were too exhausted from the crowds and all the walking to enjoy it. We walked over 12 miles that day!

… And then later, in the summer, we took a trip to Lake of the Ozarks … and one of the places I wanted to visit was a local distillery. I talked my 23 year old son into going with me. We walked into this quaint little down home tasting room and asked if they had tours. Nope, they only do tours on weekends, but we could sample cocktails. Okay, we agreed to try their cocktails. I was surprised my son decided to sample along with me because he doesn’t usually drink, but he decided to join me. We tried several cocktails, but the one we both liked best was, hands down, the butterbeer. It tasted like … well … butterbeer! Smooth buttery flavor with a sweet creamy undertone, not overly sweet, but sweet enough to make it go down easy. Definitely an enjoyable cocktail we could sip on together. And it was SUPER easy to make: only two ingredients. Gotta love that!

We bought a bottle of the butterscotch moonshine to bring home with us so we could make butterbeers together at home. It took us quite a while to purchase some good cream soda to go with it, and still we didn’t get around to making our cocktails.

I finally decided today was the day I was going to make a butterbeer. And it tasted just as good as I remember from last summer. So yummy! I used whipped cream for the top … I didn’t want to take the time and trouble to make the “foam” like they make at Universal to put on their butterbeers. If you want a more “authentic” foam, try this recipe. I love my butterbeer cocktail just like this.

My son’s a little miffed at me that I made a butterbeer without him. Sorry buddy! I wanted to get some photos for the blog … and once I was done shooting, well, I just couldn’t help myself. I took a sip and suddenly it was gone.

Your recipe says 12oz (3/4 cup) BUT 8oz=1 cup sooo is it 3/4 cup (6oz) or 12 oz (1 1/2 cup)

Thank you so much, Amber! I must have had too much butterbeer before I wrote up that recipe LOL.

I’ve corrected it now, but keep in mind that you can always adjust the cream soda to alcohol ratio depending on how strong you want your butterbeer to be.

If you can get your hands on Ozark Distillery Butterscotch Moonshine, do so! It’s worlds better then Butterscotch Schnapps. We’ve adapted this recipe a bit but this is sooo good and sooo dangerous! We’ve tried a version with Pinnacle Whipped Vodka just to add more flavor and we did caramel syrup instead of butterscotch!

Ooh the whipped vodka on top sounds amazing! I totally agree about the Ozark Butterscotch Moonshine, Jessica. SO good!
